Safety, protection and consent on Bi Friends

Tips for a first date, notes on protection and consent, and the tools the site gives you.

Meeting someone

Tips for a first date

These are general suggestions for meeting anyone you’ve got to know online. They aren’t site features, and you can use as many or as few as suit you.

  1. Get to know them on the site first

Chatting here gives you time to see how someone writes and whether it feels right. The site flags attempts to move a chat to another app, so you can decide whether you want to.

  2. Use the verification options

ID verification and the live video check each add a badge, and members can rate how an interaction went. These are optional, so a missing badge doesn’t tell you anything either way.

  3. Pick a public place

A bar, restaurant or café is an easy first choice. It helps to tell a friend where you’re going and to arrange your own travel.

  4. Share personal details at your own pace

The Terms ask members to use common sense and caution before sharing personal information, and to keep last names, addresses, workplaces and contact details off profiles.

One more practical point: there’s no need to send money to someone you meet here, and the Terms don’t allow members to ask other members for money for services.

Protection

Protection and sexual health

As with any dating where things may become physical, a little planning goes a long way. This is general information, not medical advice.

  • Talking about protection before you’re together is common and sensible, and the chat is a good place to bring it up.
  • Bring your own, and ask the other person to do the same.
  • Being open about sexual health is part of looking after each other, and regular testing is a sensible habit if you meet new people.
  • Many areas have free or low-cost sexual health clinics, and your local health service can point you to one.
Consent

Consent, in plain words

The Safety Standards & Child Protection Policy asks members to treat others respectfully and not to engage in harassment, predatory behaviour or coercion. Between two adults, that comes down to consent.

  • It’s agreed, not assumed. A clear yes from both people is the starting point, and it’s fine to ask.
  • It’s specific. Agreeing to one thing isn’t agreeing to another.
  • It can change. Either person can pause or stop at any point, and the other respects that.
  • It’s easier with a clear head. Alcohol and other substances can make it harder to know what you want.
  • It covers photos too. The Terms ask members to have the consent of everyone shown in the images and videos they upload, and the site responds to requests to remove unauthorised content.

If something doesn’t feel right, you can block the person and report them from inside the site. The Complaints & Content Removal Policy says reports are reviewed, actioned and resolved within five business days, and a support team is available 24/7. Help & contact explains how to reach them. If you ever need urgent help in person, local emergency services come first.

The rules behind this page are published: the Terms & Conditions (section 5, Safety and Account Security), the Safety Standards & Child Protection Policy and the Complaints & Content Removal Policy.

What it can’t promise

Bi Friends doesn’t run criminal background checks and doesn’t check what members say about themselves. Profiles and messages may not be genuine. The Terms ask you to take reasonable care and to use common sense before sharing personal information, and they ask everyone to keep last names, addresses, workplaces and contact details off their profiles. Your profile is also visible on the company’s sister sites.

Everything below is what the site does to help.

Knowing who you’re talking to

Three ways to check, none of them compulsory.

ID verification

Optional government ID verification that puts a badge on your profile.

How it helps: A badge is a good sign, and it makes catfishing harder.

Video verification

A live video check with a moderator confirms who you are without documents.

How it helps: Authenticity without sharing sensitive ID.

Age assurance

Age is estimated by AI, with extra checks where the law requires them.

How it helps: Helps keep under-age users out.

User ratings and feedback

Every member has a reputation score based on behaviour and feedback, and you can upvote or downvote an interaction in one click.

How it helps: A quick read on how someone treats people.

What other members can see

You decide what’s shared.

Safe usernames

Your real name and email are never shown publicly.

How it helps: Harder to trace you on social media.

Location privacy

Members see only your nearest town or city, never your exact address or live location.

How it helps: Your home stays private.

When something feels wrong

Tools you can use in the moment.

Instant blocking

Block any member and they can no longer contact or see you.

How it helps: You decide who gets to talk to you.

Easy reporting

Report members or content from inside the site.

How it helps: Problems reach the team quickly.

Off-platform contact alerts

The site detects attempts to move a conversation to an app such as WhatsApp.

How it helps: A warning about a common scam tactic.

Explicit image protection

Potentially sensitive images are blurred, with a warning, before you view them.

How it helps: You choose whether to look.

Behind the scenes

Checks you don’t have to do anything for.

Behaviour monitoring

AI looks for unusual or suspicious patterns of activity.

How it helps: Helps spot scammers and bots early.

Content moderation

Images, video and text are screened when they’re uploaded, using AI and human review.

How it helps: Screening reduces what reaches you. It can’t catch everything, which is why blocking and reporting matter.

Swift takedown

Requests to remove unauthorised or harmful content get a rapid response.

How it helps: Less exposure, and your rights protected.

Secure infrastructure

Hosted on PCI-compliant cloud infrastructure with SSL encryption.

How it helps: Helps keep your data, messages and payments safe.

Industry standards

Bi Friends is part of the Online Dating and Discovery Association.

How it helps: Safety practice that follows industry norms.

Help

Human support

A real support team is available 24/7.

How it helps: Someone to ask when you need it.

Safe dating guidance

Tips and reminders are built into the site.

How it helps: Support for safer choices online and when meeting in person.
